With the beginning of a trend Georgia to independence from the Soviet Union , the Abkhazian feeling  growing  among the risk of lossing thier identity and live in an independent republic , during  the first rounds of confrontation and violence between the two sides on July 16, 1989 in Sukhumi 16 Georgian killed . Georgian leaders have had in the past always misbelieve about the nature of national identity of Abkhazia claiming as its an artificial entity , and they are paper Russian to put pressure on Georgia . Abkhazians take a the fragmentation of the Soviet Union an opportunity to abolish the decision in connection with the annexation , which had been taken by the Soviet republic of Georgia in 1931, against  Abkhazia . The tension mounts between separatists and Georgian nationalists, and twenty people was killed in July of 1989,  during internal ethnic clashes in the capital of Abkhazia  Sukhumi . On October 28, 1989 Zviad Gamsakhuria became president of Georgia , on 9 March 1990 declared its independence . Georgia's government has adopted a series of new measures , which it considered serious violations of minority rights. In August 1990 the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Abkhazia and with the absence of Georgians members  announced that Abkhazia a sovereign nation state and Abkhazia behave since that moment as an independent country . At a time when Georgia refused to vote in 1991 in favor of staying within the Soviet Union , the Abkhaz voted with high interest to remain within the Union .

 Abkhazia declared independence from Georgia on July 23, 1992 , so Georgia sent troops to Abkhazia and the region has seen the exodus of thousands of Abkhazians , Russians, Armenians and Greeks .

The war continued between the two parties a year in which both sides suffered heavy losses , Georgians  was able to control the area for a limited period . As a result of the support Abkhaz received especially from a number of other nationalities as support of Blood Brothers Adygs from the republics of Adygea , Qrchaa - Chrkisaa , and Kabardino - Balkaria , which thier support was the cause of the independence of the Republic , The irregulars crowds reached  from the North Caucasus to support the Abkhaz troops backed by Russian weapons and air support , Georgian troops were forced to pull out of Abkhazia. And the military confrontation ended in 1993 by taking control of the capital Sukhumi by the Abkhazians. This war left about three thousand Abkhazians people  .

 Abkhazia made a new presidential elections in 2004 where Russia supported the Prime Minister Raul Gajimba , but he lost in favor of Sergei Bagbash , and because of tensions between the contestants they reach a political partnership between the two sides, now Abkhazia  have  parliament based in Sukhumi represents the entire communities of Abkhazians people , moreover there is in Abkhazia a democratic political atmosphere, multiple parties, honest competion in the elections, and peaceful transfer of authority. which not found in the Georgian enemy entity .
