Livestock sector in Abkhazia

Livestock sector is represented mainly by meat and milk directions and is oriented to the domestic market. In winter period, the Republic provides population with 100% meat and milk products, and during the holiday time only 40%, which is associated with the increase in population. Abkhazians also produce different kinds of cheese such as sulugun (as well as bloated one) and dairy fresh cheese. Abkhazian cheeses are distinguished by their original flavoring properties. The new milk factory, equipped with new Russian-Italian equipment was put into operation. The factory produces milk, cheese and yogurt. Products are supplied to the domestic market.

Sea and river fishing is represented in the country. Fish species as: trout, anchovy, chub, barbell, beluga, stellate sturgeon, sturgeon, herring, perch, salmon, shark katran, catfish, carp, plaice, skate, walleye, mullet and others are found in reservoirs of forest, lowland areas and on the coast of the Black Sea. A large number of anchovy is extracted from the Black sea. Local and foreign companies can obtain more than 30 thousand tons of anchovy during the year. For about 60% is processed, the rest of the product is exported. Such products as fish meal and fish oil could be derived from anchovy. Annually Abkhazia exports more than 8 thousand tons of fish meal and fish oil.

There is a Trout farm in Abkhazia, which has the small fish hatchery. The Hatchery is located in a very favorable environment: the water river is always clean and bright, and has its constant temperature of 9-13 degrees. There are 15 trout ponds, pools with orange-fin, and vats with fingerlings on the factory’s territory. Total production volume in a year is up to 35 thousand tons.
