The beekeeping in Abkhazia has a centuries-old history. Honey and wax were always in a great demand on the international market, so beekeeping has always been an important sector of the economy. Abkhazian honey had international recognition and was widely used as a high-value and treatment product in ancient times and was exported to countries such as Ancient Greece, Asia Minor, etc. There are more than two thousand different honey plants in Abkhazia. There are about 128,000 bee colonies. The secret of Abkhazian apiaries lies in the fact of existence of local gray mountain bee “Abhazyanka”, that is well-known throughout the world by its high productivity, peacefulness and other valuable qualities. It has a long proboscis, which allows it to gather nectar from even from the deepest flowers. Abkhazian honey can`t be compared with any other honey because of its exceptional taste and healing qualities. In Abkhazia, there are no industrial zones, that`s why the Abkhazian honey is ecologically clean and high quality product. The only public organization uniting beekeepers of Abkhazia is "Association of Beekeepers of Abkhazia". In 1995 it became a member of the International Association of Beekeeping Congress "Apimondia" in Lausanne (Switzerland) and was accepted into the international community of beekeepers. There are many different varieties of Abkhazian honey: chestnut, lime, citrus, mountain, flower, May, eucalyptus. The priority area in the development of beekeeping is its export orientation. The total volume of honey is more than 800 tons per year. The main goods turnover is during the holiday time, because honey is in a big demand among tourists.
